ARTIST STATEMENT

Light is a key element in Elina Strandberg´s art. Her often temporal installations take their form in relation to space and light. Strandberg is fascinated by different materials that either permeate or reflect light or materials that can be both fragile or almost immamaterial. In her sculptures she uses for example water due to its magical qualities of brilliance and reflectance. In the series “Heinäveistoksia” Strandberg combines dried plants to objects that she has found from nature. In these fragile sculptures, nature that strives in the midst of urban landscapes – hays and grass – meets with the human traces left in nature. With the simplicity and even rugged aesthetics, the sculptures take upon the characteristics of japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics, which is a tradition emphasising the beauty that can be found from the acceptance of imperfection and incompleteness.

Rakennan installaatioita tilaan ja valoon ja usein niiden luonteeseen kuuluu väliaikaisuus. Erityisen kiinnostavina pidän materiaaleja, jotka joko läpäisevät tai heijastavat valoa. Ne voivat olla myös hauraita ja lähes aineettomia. Vesi on usein mukana installaatioissa, sekä puhtaana materiaalina, mutta myös taianomaisen valo- ja heijastusvoimansa vuoksi.
